Few Random Thoughts

Ok - the urge is coming back very strong. I want to play video games! Something many may not know about me, but I am a gamer. Not the traditional type - but the kind that loves to not think for a while by playing video games.

Here's a list of the top video games that I love to play:

  • Madden Football -on any platform
  • Metroid
  • Zelda series
  • Excite Bike

Ya - I'm a bit old school - but if someone gets me an x Box 360, I'll catch up real quick.

Monday Morning One Liners

Happy Christmas Season - now that Thanksgiving has passed - we have 3 weeks to shed a few pounds before they come right back on. Happy exercising everyone.

Here are a few quick ones for this rainy Monday Morning in Ohio - to read more - surf over here - Lee Ann's blog.

MMOL's:

  • When I respect the image of God in others, I protect the image of God in me. (Rob Bell, Sex God.)
  • Lights on a Christmas tree really are magical - I believe.
  • The goal of the Christian journey is not comfort, not peace, nor ease - but Christlikeness.

Swallow these for a defining moment in your life.

Monday Morning One Liners

Again - these are fun to write - and hopefully to read. Surf over to Lee Ann's blog to read more:

  • In the modern news cycle, today's Armageddon is invariably tomorrow's afterthought. (not mine, but genius right?) check out ESPN for the full article
  • What if we thought about our contribution to the world as much as we think about what's for dinner?
  • I secretly smell EXPO markers when I open them, but in reality everyone sees me doing it. I guess in reality everyone sees what I think is in secret.

That's all - see you back here next Monday.

Change?

So do you know your weaknesses? I am not talking about the infamous interview question - what are your biggest weaknesses. I am talking about the things that you know you should be doing, but just aren't. Weaknesses.

Ok - maybe weaknesses aren't the right category - maybe I should be talking about areas for improvement? Whatever you like - what are the things you aren't doing, that you should? I thought about this for a bit today - and if I am real honest, the list is a great gut check - a long look in the mirror.

I think it's important to do this monthly. It prevents some major catastrophes from coming down your street. Sometimes, simply having the courage to know what you've been avoiding/skipping/ignoring/forgetting - is motivation enough to change.

So here are a few things on my list:

  • reading regularly - business has crept into my life - and yes that is an excuse
  • fun time - it's been all business for that last 2 - 3 months - and I need to get out and have some fun (i did get to play paintball one day, so I'm not totally missing here)
  • celebrating enough - there are always things to fix and improve - but what about recognizing and celebrating what is right

So those are mine - do you have some?

It's Everywhere!!!!!

The clinging to tradition because we just simply should. It's everywhere.

Today, I heard a popular radio personality discuss/debate the whole Holiday Season vs. Christmas Season titling in public venues. And he was for calling it Christmas because it is tradition and we should never mess with tradition.

To me, I agree that it should be called Christmas, but for much different reasons. Tradition is fair game to be challenged. But challenge if you will, and I still will hold true to my stance that it should be called Christmas, because I agree with the meaning of the name, not the tradition of the name.

This debate isn't the point of my post. It's the pervasive belief that Tradition has a capital T, and must be held sacred. No way. Think about if we never challenged the tradition of slavery, the tradition of arranged marriages, the tradition of the feudal system, or the tradition of communism that was forming. Should I continue?

I will keep traditions when I understand why I am using/operating/believing that tradition. If I don't agree with it or understand it, then I will choose to do something different.

The key in all of this - time. It takes time to uncover the Why behind some belief that has stood for ages, it takes time to really think about whether you believe something or not.

I guess I think that we accept tradition because it is easier and cleaner than ever thinking about them, and understanding why we really do those traditional things.

This stuff shows up in church world alot - I mean alot. That's why core values and an end target are so important. They tell you what you stand for and where you are headed very clearly - and they tell you why you use some traditions and challenge others.

Do you often think about core values - when you are upset that a tradition isn't being honored?

Transparent or Vulnerable?

Been processing this one for a bit - and I think that this discussion is significant for our lives. See, I believe that in today's world, we value, even strategize about being transparent.

Think about it:

  • Reality Television is full of "Confession" moments
  • Politicians willingly admit when they mess up (once caught)
  • Transparency is a valued commodity for Postmoderns
  • We witch-hunt athletes to force a transparent moment, where they admit that they juiced.

I could go on. It's clear that transparency, meaning the admission of fault, blemish or even weakness, is cool today. But where does all this transparency take us?

That's where vulnerability comes into play. If transparency does not lead to a vulnerable moment, the transparency was probably done for self-promotion. "I'll just admit that I'm an acoholic so they get off my back - and then they'll at least know what they are dealing with."

AHHHH, but vunerability, that is transparency that seeks help. What good is it to admit to a weakness if you are not going to try to remedy that situation? Vulnerability actually is the asking for help, the thinking of a strategy to fix a situation, while being in the open.

I've got more to process on this one - but here is where I am coming from. I've observed lots of people admitting to things that need to be changed in their life - and they simply stop right there. That is why I believe that vulnerability must be our goal - not just confession.

More to come on this one - thoughts?

MMOL - monday morning one liners

They are back - and will be for a long time to come - check out Lee Ann's blog for more.

  • One of the worst things a fan can do is say that their team is number 1, when actually they already lost 3 games, have no shot at a title, and are unranked. That is desperation or a lack of creativity.
  • There is a huge difference between transparency and vulnerability (more about this one this week).

What a Game!

I am antagonistic - I admit it. I wore my Steelers jersey today to church, because it was the Steelers-Browns game. And what a game it was!

I admit, I was nervous at the half, but them Stillers pulled it out, despite some poor play on both sides.

Crazy to admit it, but when the steelers win, I am in a good mood. I hate it when they play bad and lose. I can take it if they lose a good game. But when they play bad, it bugs me.

That's the same in anything I guess. Sometimes you play well and still lose out. Others - it is your fault. Gotta deal with them both.

  • (from Mike Conn) Forgiveness is giving up all hope for a better past.

Funny things in life

Today is Saturday - and I often take a moment on Saturday to reflect on my week. And as I think about this week, it was a pretty fun week. Not fun in the moment, but fun when I think about it all. I got some good things done. So fun is a relative term.

I guess that not everything is laughable - like painting a room, cutting my grass, assembling a crib. It was fun, just not ha ha fun.

But I do have one Ha Ha moment. Someone compared me to Larry the Cable Guy. At first I thought they were joking, but they were serious. And then I wanted to know if they thought I looked like LTCG. But that wasn't funny.

So I took the compliment, and went on my way.
